This case note examines the recent decision of the Civil Court of Catania in a suit brought by the Union of Italian Jewish Communities to enjoin an independent association from calling itself the «Jewish Community of Catania», for violating the Law n. 101 of 1989, which provides a set procedure for the public recognition of a Jewish Community in Italy. The Civil Court’s decision in favor of the Jewish Community of Catania signals an opening of the Italian legal system to a greater Jewish pluralism that is hard to reconcile with the currently operative law.
