This essay examines Nicolai Hartmann’s conception of the history of philosophy. Hartmann understands the history of philosophy as the history of the investigation of philosophical problems. For Hartmann, who was trained in the Marburg School, the history of philosophy is not to be identified with philosophical historiography, cultural history, or even history in general. The historian of philosophy must possess a theoretical capacity that enables them to discern progress in the solution of philosophical problems across time. For this reason, Hartmann distinguishes between a systematic approach and a problematic approach to philosophy, regarding the latter as more fruitful than the former. The historiographical method of the history of philosophy and the history of philosophical problems must therefore proceed together in order to trace – as is done in the sciences – the growth of philosophical knowledge over the course of historical epochs.
