73This essay examines Karl Jaspers’ epistemological project as a response to the widening rift between philosophy and the sciences in modernity. Drawing on his dual background as both physician and philosopher, Jaspers calls for a critical integration of scientific and philosophical modes of knowledge, rejecting any reductive framework that subordinates one to the other. In the context of early 20th-century debates on the legitimacy of the human sciences, he advances a polycentric, pluralistic model of knowledge in which philosophy plays a vital role as a reflective and elucidating force capable of mediating between diverse epistemic domains. The essay highlights how Jaspers’ conception of rationality resists both positivist scientism and irrational mysticism, reaffirming an Enlightenment commitment to human dignity and freedom.
