Contemporaneity is marked by profound moral unrest and by a weakening of any substantive ontology of values. Our time is increasingly torn by violent conflicts, ethical relativism, social inequalities, and ethnic and gender discrimination. It is an era characterized by a social desert of marginalization and by the decay of values – above all, human dignity and freedom. In this context, it is particularly meaningful to turn to a figure of the caliber of Maria Montessori. Her philosophy of peace education, which underlies her entire philosophical and pedagogical system, offers a valuable legacy for addressing the challenges of the new millennium and the crises that erode the foundations of our society.
