The free movement of goods in the European Union was the driving force behind European economic integration and, in application of the provisions of the TFEU that establish it, European principles and concepts were dictated that were later applied to other areas of law such as private international law. Concepts such as the principle of mutual recognition, or the overriding reasons that may limit European freedoms were defined in the CJEU's interpretation of this freedom. Now that it has reached its thirtieth birthday, this freedom has reached a stage of maturity where it is presented as a "consolidated freedom".
