This article examines the scope and implications of EU Directive 2024/1385 on strengthening the legal framework for combating female genital mutilation. It firstly focuses on the international instruments adopted within the framework of the United Nations and some regional organizations, that outline the system of applicable rules in this area. Given this normative framework, and especially the system of regional rules, the article analyses the role that the recent EU Directive may play not only in aligning and harmonising national legislations, but also in achieving the goal of full implementation of the Istanbul Convention. Finally, it focuses on the structural weaknesses of Italian legislation in light of the observations made by GREVIO in its last Report.
