International law aims to repress and prevent the gender gap against women; in order to eradicate some ideologies that hinder effective equalization, between men and women, it is necessary to reread some historical-legal models, including the mundio of women. From a reading of the relevant pieces of legislation, the mundio appears to be an institution with fluid contours which has a protective function, very differently from its configuration in Roman law, to which it is usually linked. The documents of the practice show on the one hand an uncertain application of the mundio (which tends to overlap with a joint will of the husband, father or son) or its absence, on the other hand a particular attention to its pecuniary value. The monetization of the mundio is also contemporary to the introduction of the Longobard coinage by king Rotari; These elements, together with others discussed in the analysis, may lead to believe that the mundio had a protective function for women as members of a group – family, church, royal court – but also an economic one, rather than a patrimonial one, consisting in encouraging the exchange of liquid money in the Longobard kingdom of the 7th century.
