The article examines the evolution of the European common defense concept in light of the Lisbon Treaty and subsequent developments, with reference to the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) and the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). It highlights the institutional complexity and decision making fragmentation, as well as the constraints arising from the intergovernmental framework and the unanimity rule. It addresses the strategic relationship between EU Member States and the United States, the dependence on NATO, and the challenges posed by the lack of genuine European military autonomy. Special attention is given to the development of common operational capabilities, the management of external missions, and the prospect of a more integrated European defense.
