38Re-releasing past titles in a renewed form has become an increasingly established practice in the contemporary video game market. Brown (2023) coins the term "temporalization" to refer to the adaptation of a game across time, noting how significantly the extent of changes can vary from case to case. This plurality of approaches is also reflected in the variety of terms used to market these games, such as "porting," "remaster," and "remake." Regardless of the terminology used, any remake inevitably creates a relationship with the game that inspired it, a relationship that will be examined by borrowing Genette's notion of hypertextuality and adapting it to the field of game studies. To explore the several philological questions that arise from the different degrees of transformation linking a hypogame to its hypergame, the unique case of Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) will be analysed, as it differs from other apparently similar examples of remakes not only for of its unprecedented development as a multi-installment project, but also, and above all, due to its metanarrative aspects. The comparison between this title and its hypogame leads to the question of what it means to remake a game: the thesis advanced in this article is that Final Fantasy VII Remake is not a remake of Final Fantasy VII as a game, but rather an experience, and therefore aims to recreate its disruptive impact by replicating, with different strategies, its most significant elements.
