B. Mairéad Pratschke (PhD) is an internationally recognised researcher and strategic advisor working with institutions, governments, and organisations on AI strategy, governance, and digital education. With over 25 years of experience in digital learning innovation and training in European policy and governance, she works at the intersection of design, policy and technology. In this interview with Valentina Reda, Pratschke frames generative AI as an infrastructural shift – embedded in institutional systems rather than adopted as a standalone tool – raising concerns about the displacement of pedagogical agency as educational choices become encoded into technical architectures. She argues that Europe must respond through digital sovereignty, cross-institutional collaboration, and open, multilingual models, while making sure that adoption is led by pedagogy. Careful integration is needed to avoid cognitive debt, by designing for pedagogical alignment and using context engineering in tandem with her signature TPAIK and Agentic Community of Inquiry (ACoI) frameworks. The interview ultimately calls for an evidence-based European agenda that empowers educators as "educator-designers", safeguarding human-centred learning and institutional autonomy.
