469This article sets out to contribute to bridging the existing gap in the current academic literature concerning the intersection of governance and artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of education. In particular, it presents a comparative empirical analysis involving two major Italian universities: the University of Florence and the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna. Through this analysis, the study seeks to shed light on how institutional support for the integration of Ai technologies is conceptualized, structured, and operationalized within these higher education institutions. One of the core aims of the article is to explore the ways in which institutional support mechanisms are defined and implemented, not only in terms of their formal structures or strategic frameworks, but also with respect to their actual capacity to promote, enable, and sustain the adoption of Ai-based tools and systems in academic environments. The research further seeks to identify and describe the different modalities such support can take, and to evaluate its effectiveness in fostering innovation, facilitating digital transformation, and aligning technological change with broader educational and governance goals.
