The article examines the limits of compensatory remedies available to victims of international crimes committed in Syria before the courts of European States, in light of the current impossibility to obtain justice and reparation from their State of nationality. It highlights how restrictions imposed by national and EU legislation on the exercise of jurisdiction and on access to compensation funds significantly affect their ability to obtain effective monetary redress in third States. After critically assessing the existing legal framework in light of international human rights law and European private international law, the article adopts a forwardlooking perspective and emphasises the role of enhanced inter-State cooperation in the prosecution of international crimes as a means of indirectly strengthening victims' access to reparations.
