In Leibniz there is a radical dualism between the appearance of the extended material world, as witnessed by our senses, and metaphysical reality, which instead consists exclusively of unextended immaterial substances, or monads. This dualism poses a problem that is difficult to resolve within the monadological system: how can the extension of bodies phenomenally arise from what is unextended? In reality, Leibniz assumes only a correspondence, not a direct passage, between the multitude of unextended monads constituting the universe and our perceptions, which instead reveal to us a bodily mass. And the only possible explanation of this correspondence must be sought in the creative act of God.
