This is the first published translation of Hans Jonas’s pivotal essay Plotinus on Eternity and Time. The essay includes Jonas’s abridged translation of Ennead, III, 7(45), interspersed with his interpretive commentary, which underscores the primacy that Plotinus assigns to futurity outside the Intellect, the place of Life as common genus of Time and Eternity, and the role of the will to individuation in the Plotinian myth of an originary fall from timelessness. A translators’ introduction situates the essay biographically and philosophically within Jonas’s corpus.
