What is territory? Is the cartographic model we use to conceive and represent it as a static cut out of space adequate? What happens if we insert time into the notion of territoriality, reconceptualizing it? In this text I start with the most established ways of thinking about that notion, those linked to maps, highlighting their limitations. Drawing on the empirical case of viticulture and terroir and relying on Tim Ingold (and on Merleau-Ponty) as my main theoretical references, I offer a processual conception of territory that emphasizes its autopoietic and agentive dimensions. My effort is not a normative one, reclaiming the vital power of (organic) matter or proposing a rethinking of our ways of inhabiting the world. I suggest an epistemological shift and a re-founding of the language with which we understand territories, a shift in our ways of seeing, to echo Wittgenstein’s therapeutic invitation.
