88Across Europe, entire cities, economies, and socio-environmental ecosystems are built around the namesake wines they produce like Champagne, Tokaj, or Barolo. Terroir discourse centers on causal relationships linking geological and climatic specificities to human traditions and practices. Wines originating from regions with strong territorial reputations are often labeled with geographical indications (GI) to guarantee origin, while vineyards may be classified as «cultural landscapes». The blending of nature and agriculture into economic and cultural policy prompts regulations to valorize, demarcate, typify, and safeguard these supposed place-based connections which are deemed at risk in an epoch of globalization and climate change. Simultaneously, winemakers are increasingly prevented from implementing reasoned adaptations to mitigate climate change or protect biodiversity, and are instead compelled to eschew emplaced knowledge and vine-soil care relations to maintain GI labels informed by «official» knowledge and regulations built to maintain products seen as typical of their terroir.
