The essay examines the key role that Alexandre Kojève’s famous seminar held in Paris between 1933 and 1939 played in creating a favorable interpretive climate for Hegelian philosophy in 1930s France. On the one hand Kojève’s atheistic-immanentist interpretation allowed Hegelian thought to appear contemporary, on the other hand it resulted in a cultural phenomenon, known as the Hegel-Renaissance. This new Hegel was easily adaptable to the theoretical demands of the present, making it a chameleon-like figure. In conclusion, the essay attempts to evaluate the importance of «Kojève’s Hegel», identify the reasons for its historical relevance and explain why it is unlikely to make a comeback within the horizon of contemporary thought.
