188This article explores the Oratio dominica CL linguis, a seemingly dry text consisting simply of 150 Our Fathers translated into 150 languages, printed in 1805 by Jean-Joseph Marcel, director of the Imprimerie impériale in Paris. It was, however, directly linked to the time of creation, namely that of Pope Pius VII’s arrival in Paris for Napoleon’s coronation, and the earlier arrival of «his» typographic material. Indeed, the Oratio was a diplomatic gift presented during the pontiff’s highly political visit, and encapsulating complex issues. Paris was viewed, in this instance, as a new imperial – and typographic – Rome, the latter being a means of effecting the former. An analysis of this printed artefact reveals its part in an endeavour to transform Paris into a universal capital, a city-world. Where did these prayers come from? How were they printed? With what material? And by whom? Answering these questions provides a material history of the typographic and linguistic knowledge that this book displays
