The paper explores the evolution of contemporary archaeology, emphasizing its theoretical and methodological developments within a global framework. It describes how the discipline has expanded from a post-medieval focus to a comprehensive approach encompassing modern and contemporary periods, bridging the traditional divide between old and new-world archaeology. This global perspective involves archaeologists worldwide and calls for the harmonization of methods, chronologies, and approaches. By prioritizing the study of global landscapes over isolated sites, contemporary archaeology fosters a more inclusive understanding of shared heritage and reshapes public heritage and cultural memory. In particular, the archaeological analysis of 20th-century war landscapes in the Apulian Murge illustrates how conflict, migration, and industrialization have left intertwined and lasting imprints, transforming rural and marginal areas into complex historical networks of sites and contexts.
