This contribution addresses several issues, beginning with the misleading problem of establishing a chronological definition for a field of study, leading ultimately to a discussion on the nature of data found in vast quantities across the landscape. From this context arise considerations regarding the inadequacy of current legislation and the regulations imposed on those engaged in field research. Although research in contemporary archaeology uses the same tools and techniques as those employed for other periods, the close temporal proximity of its subjects introduces emotional considerations that are otherwise absent. Finally, this work offers reflections that contemporary archaeology brings to all archaeological study: considerations of the relevance of its topics, the necessary reforms in cultural heritage legislation, and the broader question of the freedom to conduct research. It also highlights the importance of educating on material heritage from any period as a historical source, free from identity-based fallacies and fetishistic approaches. The discussion extends to ethnoarchaeology, understood as the study of living contexts and as the archaeology of ourselves, a theoretical and practical complement essential to a contemporary archaeology that seeks to deeply explore the complexity of present-day material evidence.
