60The paper aims to examine how experts influenced the discussions about urban planning reform in Italy during the 1960s, observing the roles played by a few key figures during a critical period of urban transformation for the country. The focus will be on the technical experts and cultural dialogues that accompanied and paved the way for the restructuring of the Ministry of Public Works under Socialist Minister Giacomo Mancini (1964-1969), leading to the approval of some significant national legislation, such as the transitional law of 1967 and the Urban Planning Standards Decree of 1968. The examination of the network of experts involved in the framework of the Directorate-General for Urban Planning reveals a varied background of relations, reference models and experiences acquired in various contexts and with different intentions. This network played a crucial role in shaping the decision-making process, connecting technical and intellectual figures, public institutions, and civil society. Adopting a plurality of sources, the paper sheds new light on the technical cultures of ministerial structures in the season of center-left governments in the second half of the 1960s through a number of individual and group trajectories.
