The article reconstructs some uses of the concept of community from the nineteenth century to today. The concept of community plays an important role in the criticism of bourgeois society, which has dissolved the relationships of community and solidarity between individuals. The theme of community, in its utopian value, is very present in socialist or communist pre-Marxian writers, between the French Revolution and 1848. Marx has a complicated relationship with the community, because in some texts he speaks of the new society as a “true communityµ, while in other texts, especially those of maturity, he prefers to use different terms such as Assoziation or Verein. The concept of community also plays an important role in Nazi ideology, which refers to the idea of Volksgemeinschaft (popular community) in exclusionary and racist function. In contemporary thought community elements are found in the theories of gift and convivialism (for example in the reflection of Alain Caillé), but also in socialist theorists such as G. A. Cohen.
