28The concept of “communityµ is among those most often misunderstood. The article reconstructs three versions of it. First, Tönnies’s idea of community as Gemeinschaft, still found in Weber’s and Parsons’s picture of an opposition of modernization and community. Second, the concept used by the authors labeled as “communitariansµ (Alasdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor, Michael Sandel, Robert Bellah, Amitai Etzioni, Peter Berger) no longer presupposes cultural uniformity, but understands community as a human association predicated around the sense of a common destiny, a common good not reducible to Paretian optimality. Third, a liberal version of the concept, championed by Dworkin, understands community along critical and anti-traditionalist lines, as possessing a worse or better quality of collective life that reverberates on the quality of life of individuals. Finally, the article raises the question whether the enduring aversion of Italian progressive, leftwing circles to community as conducive to tribalism, localism and the balkanization of society, isn’t ultimately linked with a persistent failure to take sufficient notice of these distinctions
