In the post-conciliar period numerous spontaneous Catholic groups emerged as a result of a peculiar interpretation and reception of the conciliar decisions. Among the groups, new liturgical forms were experimented, movements for peace were born, for the political freedom of believers and in support of the workers’ and students’ struggles that flared up since 1968. Numerous groups implemented forms of dialogue with Marxist-inspired parties and movements. Several studies have addressed these issues, but little or no research has been done on the networks of transnational connections built by spontaneous Catholic groups and base communities. The article – through the initiatives of Abbot Giovanni Franzoni and the San Paolo’s Base Community – is a first step towards an organic reconstruction of what appears to be a concrete Catholic International: autonomous, antihierarchical, not infrequently inspired by Marxist thought and critical of the process of reabsorption of the drives triggered by the Council.
