This paper aims to explore, from a socio-historical perspective, the emergence and spread of liturgical songs within French Catholicism, originating from the repertoire of the Emmanuel Community, the largest new ecclesial movement in the Francophone world. This spread initially served as a means of shaping the French new ecclesial movement milieu starting in the mid1970s. However, the tensions surrounding this process illustrate not only the revival of conflicts inherited from a period of «Catholic crisis» but also, and more importantly, the symbolic devaluation of academic knowledge within the post-conciliar ecclesial field.
