Forty years after "Libertatis Nuntius", this contribution aims to highlight some lesser-known links and passages in the dense chronology that marks the earliest genesis of the first instruction of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) on liberation theology. Moving from the study of unpublished documentation, the article reconstructs how the CDF began to formulate the idea of organising regional meetings with a continental character between the heads of the dicastery and those in charge of the doctrinal commissions of the national episcopates, starting from Latin America where the last acts of the theological controversy on liberation theology, and of the more general ecclesial conflict that accompanied it, were unfolding. The article aims above all to focus on the intertwining of the events of the first theological crisis of global Christianity and Joseph Ratzinger’s call for a «regular and organic» collaboration between the CDF and the doctrinal bodies of the episcopates. Particular attention is paid to the vicissitudes of the Commission on Doctrine of the Conferencia Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil (CNBB).
