594The results of the OECD’s PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) international survey have shown since the first edition in 2000 that boys perform better than girls in mathematics, but worse in reading, with some variability between countries (Di Castro, Ferri, 2022). It emerges that Poland has a gender gap in mathematics close to zero, while in Italy it is very high. This contribution presents the results of robust statistical analyses carried out with the Oaxaca-Blinder (OB) and Oaxaca Recentered Influence Functions (Oaxaca RIF) method, to verify how the scores differ along the distribution, identifying the variables (individual and contextual) most responsible for the gap. The international comparison is therefore useful to highlight the reasons and possible policy solutions to be adopted so that Italy too can reduce this gap.
