This essay examines the binary oppositions of "savagery/civilization" and "nature/culture" – concepts upheld by several anthropologists and frequently adopted by Hellenists. Through an analysis of Greek vocabulary (e.g., "agrios", "agriotês", "eschatia") and a close reading of selected texts, it becomes evident that these dualistic frameworks are highly problematic and inapplicable to Greek cultural contexts. Young girls and boys referred to as "pôloi" (colts or fillies) are not «savages», nor are deities such as Artemis and Dionysus inherently «savage», contrary to interpretations by some scholars.
