207In "Vita Activa" Hannah Arendt holds that the separation of private and public life underlies the structure of the Greek "polis" and the possibility of leading a free life in the community. Hannah Arendt does not problematize the absence or «structural marginality» of the feminine within the social-political space of the "polis". From a gendered perspective, Nicole Loraux has problematized the "oikos/polis" dichotomy and offered other interpretations of the complex and intertwined dynamics between private and public and between female and male «spaces». In Athenian society, male and female appear interdependent and intersecting, and behind their seeming separation operates the system of the inseparability and interchangeability of the sexes.
