140Social reproduction is a central question in sociology, and nowhere is this more the case than within the study of elites. Yet while families are central to stories of socialization, they are frequently lost within accounts of social stratification. In this paper we seek to change the unit of analysis, centering not individuals but families within the studies of the super-rich. We argue that such an approach transforms what we see and what we find when we look at the social world. Drawing upon cases of our own research, we show how placing families at the center of elite studies greatly enriches sociological inquiry. This provides a helpful corrective to elite studies in general, and suggests that some of our knowledge may be inaccurate or incomplete, because of how we conceptualize and operationalize our object of inquiry.
