51Revisiting the issues of the «Rivista di Filosofia» from 1909 to the present day makes it possible to document the presence of a line of reflection on the English and Scottish Enlightenment that cannot be traced back to the age of reason and universal progress. The article sets out the central features of this alternative line of the Enlightenment involving Shaftesbury, Mandeville, Smith and mainly Hume. It is then argued that in this line of thinking there are resources to respond to the criticisms of the «anti-Enlightenment current» as documented for example by L. Sternhell, G. Lloyd and J. Israel. Finally, it is suggested that a legacy of this reflection can today inspire one of the ways in which philosophical research can be conducted by favouring a consideration of common life, a moderate scepticism, and those projects that take up the aspiration of ancient culture to hold together personal and public happiness.
