This study argues that the poem "Le ceneri di Gramsci" can be read as a parallel to the tenth canto of Dante’s "Inferno". The analysis focuses on three key points of contact between the two texts: the funerary setting, the dialogue with a deceased political leader (Farinata for Dante, Gramsci for Pasolini), and the interruption of this conversation due to the appearance of another figure, connected to the role of poet of the two "agentes": Cavalcante in Dante’s "Inferno" and Shelley in Pasolini’s poem. To fully restore Shelley’s significance within "Le ceneri di Gramsci", this essay examines his reception in Italy, both in poetry (from Carducci and, especially, D’Annunzio) and in criticism, through the debate between Praz and Croce on Romanticism. A forthcoming contribution will extend the analysis to the 1950s intellectual context, considering the role of "Letteratura e vita nazionale" – particularly its discussion on Dante’s canto of the heretics – in postwar debates. This dual approach, combining the Pasolini’s poetic sources with controversies surrounding Gramsci’s legacy, enables a reinterpretation of "Le ceneri di Gramsci" as a reflection on the dialectic between poetry and structure, developed in opposition to Croce through Gramsci’s thought. In this poetic dramatization, Gramsci and Shelley emerge as central figures who embody and intensify key polarities within Pasolini’s poetic and political imagination.
