139This article examines Roberto Longhi’s influence on Pier Paolo Pasolini’s cinematic imagery and Carlo Emilio Gadda’s journalistic prose. Regarding Pasolini, the study suggests adding the Bamboccianti – Flemish and Dutch painters active in 17th-century Rome – to Longhi’s well-known group of 'painters of reality'. Their depictions of an impoverished European underclass resonate with the world Pasolini encountered in Rome in 1950. Gadda’s article, meanwhile, originates from his visit to the Central Institute for Restoration in Rome in 1942. Here, Longhi’s impact is evident in Gadda’s engagement with pictorial restoration, particularly through the concept of 'mental restoration', which Longhi associated with Gestalt psychology and the idea of an «eye that is not only a retina but an immediate judgment». Gadda’s text unexpectedly links Longhi’s philological method with Giuseppe Secco Suardo’s "Manuale ragionato del restauratore" (1866), which also influenced his linguistic style.
