Often mistakenly labeled a 'peasant poet', the Lucanian Rocco Scotellaro (1923 1953) was, in fact, a refined classicist. This article examines his early translation, "Il viaggio del sole" ('The Sun’s Journey'), of a fragment by Mimnermus, revealing it as a true and creative rewriting. A detailed comparison of the Greek and Italian verses addresses and seeks to resolve a critical crux in the Italian rendition, which had been previously noted by scholars.
