154This article recalls Bruno Bara’s contribution to the development of the constructivist and relational paradigm in cognitive psychotherapy. In the model he proposed, the therapeutic relationship, based on a non-judgmental and benevolent attitude of cooperation and trust, is considered the most important factor that can promote and sustain the processes underlying a profound and positive change in the patient. A key concept in Bruno Bara’s theoretical model is "enactment", an experiential dimension in which the patient acts out his implicit and automatic dysfunctional modalities in the "hic et nunc" of the session and in which the therapist and patient have a direct and embodied experience of these modalities. The centrality of the therapeutic relationship and the "enactment" process led Bruno Bara to advocate that the training of psychotherapists should include a personal analysis that would enable the therapist to acquire an adequate knowledge of his own relational patterns, the emotions that characterize them, the way they are activated and the ability to modulate them. Throughout his clinical and scientific career, Bruno Bara has always emphasized the importance of basing therapeutic action on scientific research and of scientific research in turn recognizing the clinical dimension as an essential testing ground for its own theories.
