The goal of the special issue on the "Times of welfare" is to show the relevance of analysing the temporal dimensions implicated in welfare agencies, to show how they work and how they can reproduce inequalities and systemic violence. While studies of time in welfare systems are mostly relevant to the field of migration studies, we would like to highlight their importance also to other areas. This amounts to an attempt to develop an epistemic vocabulary which can help us reframe, reveal, repair and reimagine temporality in welfare systems. In particular, by focusing on the embodied and everyday experiences of marginalized subjects and street-level workers, we aim to show the inequalities and asymmetries in the distribution of resources, the institutional mechanisms that tend to reproduce precarity and uncertainty. At the same time, we want to highlight the possibilities for prefigurative and aspirational re-imaginings of time and of the perceived capacity of acting on the present and on the future itself.
