79This article addresses the social phenomenon of motherhood intertwined with that of drug addiction by exploring their analytical dimension of time. In personal perception and social representation, the combination of being a mother and a drug user acquires a highly negative social meaning in terms of stigma, becoming doubly deviant subjects. When following a micro perspective, social actors are characterized by the combination of these two statuses in perceiving time in terms of its denial. Grounded in ethnographic methodology, this study adopts participant observation and unstructured interviews. The research was carried out with subjects living in a therapeutic community for drug-addicted mothers in Italy. I argue that in the rehab, social expectations diverge from mothers’ personal aspirations, and time within the same facility is designed and managed according to the norms and values proper to a total institution.
