129The history of liberalism is the history of a multiplicity of interpretations of the theme of freedom. A seemingly simple topic, such as that of the well-known distinction between negative and positive freedom, is actually declined, as it is well known, in many and different ways. Further evidence is provided by the recent literature which, although united by the discussion of the history of liberalism(s) between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, is sometimes characterized by rather different interpretations of liberal doctrine. The article therefore aims to offer a reasoned overview on the subject through the studies of Michael Freeden and Alan Kahan, Joshua Cherniss and Samuel Moyn, showing similarities and divergences in their different interpretations of liberalism.
