At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when positivist scientism irreversibly left its mark, despite the observation made from the 1890s of an inability of science to respond to the most fundamental concerns of man, the defenders of Christianity were tempted to demonstrate the truth of the Christian religion by means of experimental proof. Formulated by the novelist Paul Bourget in 1899, the project, despite some attempts at realisation, encountered the reluctance of professional Catholic apologists and had no posterity beyond the 1930s.
