Giuseppe Alberigo demonstrated that John XXIII intervened to freely consult the bishops in preparation for the Second Vatican Council, there by deciding to exclude the questionnaire prepared by the Antepreparatory Commission. The recently published diary of the secretary of the Antepreparatory Commission, Pericle Felici, along with archival documents, provides new insights into the story of the questionnaire, which was initially designed to consult the bishops and then rather suddenly excluded. These documents also add new information on the various perspectives on the council and its preparation by John XXIII and the Roman Curia, the different, even conflicting projects that led to the appointment of the Antepreparatory Commission, and the competition within the Roman Curia for the monopoly in directing the council’s preparation.
