This short piece comments on the aspects relevant to social history of late antique chanceleries and explores the way in which the "Collectio Avellana" has been analysed to elicit interesting information about social standing, function and networks of the "notarii" and letter carriers. It highlights the social relevance acquired and the political skills necessary to those directly busy in producing documents, exchanging and carrying documents of importance. Briefly, it looks at late antique world from the angle of a specific, yet fundamental group of functionaries.
