132Drawing on the theoretical and empirical arguments on which this special issue of «Problemi dell’Informazione» is based, this article offers an exploratory case study. It highlights how «going beyond» newsrooms is not a peculiar feature of emerging forms of journalism, but the hallmark of one of its oldest forms: local journalism. The results show that, despite the pervasiveness of digital technologies in journalistic work, the Italian journalistic culture that hampers proximity between journalists and the public, and a vast and heterogeneous territory to cover, «VareseNews» journalists consider it crucial to observe and interact with the inhabitants of the Varese province in their daily spaces and times. This is considered essential to assess their reliability as potential sources, to understand their needs and expectations as potential members of the public, but it also allows «VareseNews» journalists to communicate their own authoritativeness in reporting on people and dynamics specific to the Varese province. The results suggest that the heart of the local journalist’s profession is the physical encounter with local inhabitants. Although «VareseNews» can be considered a benchmark for local journalists and news outlets in Italy, further case studies are needed to fully understand the phenomenon.
