The article contributes to the study of the relationship between school choice and territory. Specifically, it presents the results of an ethnographic study conducted between 2020 and 2022 in Affori, a northern district of Milan undergoing gentrification, where phenomena of school segregation can be observed. The study investigates the decision-making processes that lead middle-class parents to choose a local school. The article argues that the relationship between school choice and territory can be understood through the concept of the 'spatial opportunity structure'. The socio-spatial configuration of the neighbourhood and the ways in which actors engage with it shape parents’ preferences and priorities. In addition to enriching the debate on school choice with new empirical data, the article aims to offer new analytical perspectives on the relationship between decision-making processes, the middle class, and segregation in contemporary urban contexts.
