In reflections – both academic and otherwise – on civic virtues, the traditional reference model is that of the citizen eager to promote the common good of the community and to this end actively engaged in the public sphere of their society. This essay challenges this inevitably stereotyped view of civic virtues and questions what the most appropriate approach to virtues might be in light of the social, political, and economic developments of recent decades. In societies where moral individualism and the crisis of collective realities are widespread, what should be the quintessential model of civic virtues? The citizen-politician at the center of the "agora", or perhaps the judge, who – in 'solitude' – seeks to prioritize justice in their action? By presenting the judge and judicial virtues as an example of virtuous public action in our contemporary times, the essay examines the type of process of moral development to which citizens should ideally aspire within modern liberal democracies.
