This article studies aspirations to stay – or immobility aspirations – among young adults living in Italian peripheral municipalities. The focus on the Italian context is made possible by a unique dataset collected thanks to the "Giovani Dentro" research project in the two years 2020-2021. "Giovani Dentro", initiated by Riabitare l’Italia Association, represents the first collection of data on the topic of immobility aspirations among young adults (aged 18-39) living in the Italian inner areas. Identifying the reason behind the apparently irrational choice of staying where everyone else is moving away is fundamental to understanding how and in which direction the transnational ties of marginalized territories traditionally affected by a strong culture of migration have been developed.
