This article examines the implications of theorizing care as work. The author begins by posing the problem of a theoretical framework based solely on traditionally masculine activities, interrogating if this framework is sufficiently malleable to integrate care work and its specificities. Care work is largely feminized. Then, the article investigates feminist strategies for appropriating the category of work, and the advantages and disadvantages of recognizing domestic and care work within a broader category of work itself. The author examines whether the category of work is the most appropriate for addressing the issues of survival that lie at the heart of the ethics and work of care. Following this, the author demonstrates that free forms of care organization can develop on the margins of commercialism, regenerating devastated worlds, in logics of survival that can also lead to political experiments in real-world democracy, she concludes with an examination of how care work transforms the episteme of work.
