194This article examines the multimodal nature of figurative language processing through the framework of 4E cognition, which conceptualizes cognition as extended, embedded, enactive, and embodied. It argues that language is fundamentally multimodal, encompassing both visible and invisible dimensions of meaning-making that span bodily, cognitive, and environmental domains. The analysis focuses on the embodied simulation mechanism, emphasizing its role in constructing meaning through the activation of sensorimotor and affective systems. The article contends that the engagement of bodily information sources is influenced by various factors, including the context of the utterance, the communicative intentions of the speaker, and, critically, the conventionality or novelty of the linguistic stimuli. Beyond discussing the dynamic role of bodily knowledge in interpreting metaphorical sentences, the article highlights two central insights: first, the 4E framework offers a robust and comprehensive model for understanding the layered multimodality of linguistic cognition; second, distinguishing between metaphorical cognition as outlined by Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and the actual processes involved in metaphor interpretation enables the integration of foundational CMT principles with more nuanced, empirically grounded approaches to embodied metaphor processing.
