38This paper offers a critical examination of the work of Amelia Rosselli, whose poetry, as Pier Vincenzo Mengaldo asserts, constitutes “a fundamentally unique phenomenon in the Italian literary landscape” of the twentieth century (Mengaldo 1978: 993). In her ongoing quest for self-identity, Rosselli distances herself from what she terms a “heavily feminist stance” (Rosselli 1980), yet simultaneously engages with the limitations inherent in an oppositional conception of gender. Her writing is marked by a persistent and often painful reflection on notions of difference and relation, otherness and fluidity. These concerns manifest both thematically – in expressions such as “womanandnotman” (Rosselli 2012: 1139) and “universal body” (Rosselli 2012: 162) – and formally, through continuous irregularities and shifts in syntactic gender. Drawing on a representative selection of Rosselli’s works, this contribution analyzes texts in which these reflections are most prominent. It will examine not only her poetry and prose, but also interviews and critical writings, where both writing and meta-reflection become tools to “unlearn false lessons” (Rosselli 2012: 840).
