The essay highlights the transportation of timber on the Bavarian river Isar in the eighteenth century. This took place in various spatial dimensions: the local administrative documents show that the wood from the mountain forests of the Tölz district was rafted to the residence city of Munich as construction timber or drifted as fire wood. In addition, rafting was also used for long-distance trade. The Aschach toll registers show that the timber and timber products from Tölz were also traded on the Danube and across the Bavarian-Austrian border as far as Vienna. The essay investigates the dynamic development of local and long-distance transportation on the Isar in the eighteenth century and presents the players involved in the timber trade. These were the guilds of the market town of Tölz and of the city of Munich, the electoral administrative authorities and, above all, the rural population of the Tölz district.
