Kingdom of Sardinia’s Piedmont and its capital, Turin, were characterized by numerous large construction sites in the eighteenth century: the government palaces, the suburban royal residences, the military forts on the border with France. The increased need for timber prompted the Savoy State to source from the forests of the Upper Susa Valley, in western Piedmont. The following contribution attempts to reconstruct how the transport of timber from the Alps to the city of Turin took place, highlighting the use of the floating technique through the use of the Dora Riparia river. The documentary sources of architecture, such as the «Azienda generale Fabbriche e Fortificazioni» fund at the State Archives of Turin, were analyzed to reconstruct the wood supply chain. Through the examination of the documentation of the construction site, important information emerges regarding a research topic, the wood supply chain, within a context, the Western Alps, which to date remains mostly unexplored.
